> How to open Excel files on Chromebook: the Files app preview, Google Sheets, Excel for the web, and what changes when you edit there.
To open Excel files on a Chromebook, double-click the workbook in the Files app and pick an app when asked. Google Sheets needs no setup and moves the file into Google Drive. Microsoft 365, Excel on the web, needs OneDrive and moves the file there. Both edit the workbook, and both need an internet connection.

## Choosing an app for Excel files in the Chromebook Files app

The first time you open an Excel workbook from the Files app, the Chromebook asks which app should handle it. Google's help page on [opening and editing Office files on a Chromebook](https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/2481498?hl=en) lists two choices: Google Sheets, which works straight away, and Microsoft 365, which needs a one-time setup with OneDrive.

The choice you make becomes the default for that file type. To switch later, right-click the file in Files, choose Open with, and pick the other app. That is useful when you want Sheets for quick reading and Microsoft 365 for files that must stay exactly as Excel made them.

A converted bank statement downloaded from a browser lands in the Downloads folder in Files. Open it from there. The same route works for a workbook you copied from a USB stick or received as an email attachment and saved.

## Opening Excel files on a Chromebook in Google Sheets

Google Sheets opens an Excel file with no setup. According to the same Google help page, if the workbook is not already in Google Drive, the Chromebook prompts you to move it there, and then it opens in Sheets. Afterwards you find it in the Google Drive folder in Files, not in Downloads.

That move surprises people looking for the file later. If a converted statement vanishes from Downloads after you open it, check the Google Drive folder. Google's page also notes that editing in Sheets needs a Google Workspace account, the same Google account most Chromebooks already sign in with.

## Opening Excel files on a Chromebook in Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 is the route for keeping a workbook in Excel's own hands. Google's Chromebook help says to set it up from the Launcher's Explore section, or choose it the first time you open an Excel file, and then connect the Files app to OneDrive. It also says OneDrive is required to open and edit files in Microsoft 365.

As with Sheets, the file moves. If the workbook is not in OneDrive yet, the Chromebook asks to move it, and it then lives in the Microsoft OneDrive folder in Files, where your changes save. You can also go straight to Excel on the web in the Chrome browser, sign in, and open files from OneDrive there.

## What changes when a Chromebook edits an Excel workbook?

Editing an Excel workbook on a Chromebook changes where the file lives, and in Sheets it can change what the file can do. Values, sums and simple formulas carry across. Macros, links to other workbooks and some protections do not, so check those if the workbook relies on them.

Google's page on [working with Office files in Docs, Sheets and Slides](https://support.google.com/docs/answer/6055139?hl=en) lists what Sheets does not support. Linked spreadsheets in Excel files are not supported. Macros are not supported, with Apps Script suggested instead. Locked and hidden cells become viewable and editable once a protected workbook moves into Sheets. The same page lists XLSX among the formats you can save back to an Office format, so a Sheets edit can be downloaded as an Excel file again.

### Sheets and Microsoft 365 compared

| | Google Sheets route | Microsoft 365 route |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Setup | None | One-time, connect Files to OneDrive |
| Where the file moves | Google Drive folder | Microsoft OneDrive folder |
| Account needed to edit | Google Workspace | Microsoft account with OneDrive |
| Macros and linked workbooks | Not supported | Kept in the file, though VBA macros do not run in Excel on the web |
| Offline | Basic offline editor only | Basic offline editor only |
| Best for | Reading and totalling a converted statement | A workbook that must go back to Excel unchanged |

A converted statement is a plain table of dates, descriptions, amounts and balances, so Sheets handles it without loss. If you want to compare the sheet with the PDF it came from, [setting up a PDF and Excel side by side on iPad](/blog/ipad-pdf-and-excel-side-by-side) shows the same two-window check on a tablet, and a Chromebook's split-screen works in the same spirit.

## Can a Chromebook open Excel files offline?

Not fully. Google's Chromebook help says you cannot open Sheets or Microsoft 365 files while offline. Trying produces an error, but the Chromebook can open the file in a basic offline editor with limited features. That is enough to read a converted statement, not to do serious editing.

If you know you will be without a connection, open the workbook while you are online and keep the tab open. For anything beyond reading, wait until you are back online so the file saves to Drive or OneDrive properly.

### Files that are not Excel files yet

A Chromebook often meets the spreadsheet before it exists. A photo of a statement taken on a phone, saved in Apple's HEIC format, will not open as rows anywhere. [Turning a HEIC photo into Excel](/blog/heic-photo-to-excel) covers that route. For a PDF statement, the job is a conversion first, and [comparing software that converts PDF to Excel](/blog/software-to-convert-pdf-to-excel) helps you choose a tool that runs in a browser. FastBankConvert is being built for that browser route, with downloads in Excel, CSV or JSON. It is getting ready to open; join through [Get started](/get-started).
