> Why an XFA PDF to Excel conversion shows a "please wait" page, which forms use XFA, and how to get the form data out another way.
An XFA PDF to Excel conversion usually returns one useless page that says "Please wait", because the real form is stored as XML inside the file. To get the data out, open the file in Adobe Reader or Acrobat, then print it to a new PDF or export the form data, and convert that instead.

## Why does an XFA PDF open on a "please wait" page?

An XFA PDF opens on a "please wait" page because that page is a placeholder. XFA, the XML Forms Architecture, keeps a form's layout and data as XML inside the PDF and leaves it to the reader to build the pages when the file opens. A reader that cannot do that shows only the placeholder.

The placeholder text is familiar to anyone who has hit one: "Please wait... If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document", followed by a note that your viewer may not support it. Atlassian's support article on the error, [Confluence preview of PDF files shows "Please wait"](https://support.atlassian.com/confluence/kb/confluence-preview-of-pdf-files-shows-error-please-wait-if-this-message-is-not-eventually-replaced-by-the-proper-contents-of-the-document/), gives the cause plainly: certain PDF files, dynamic XFA forms created in Adobe LiveCycle, can only be opened in Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat.

A converter is one of those other viewers. It reads the pages that are actually in the file, finds the placeholder, and returns a sheet with one line of text. Nothing is wrong with the converter or the download. The form simply was never written out as ordinary pages.

This is different from a file that will not open at all. If your statement fails with an error or shows nothing in any viewer, [fixing a bank statement PDF that will not open](/blog/bank-statement-pdf-not-opening) covers partial downloads, passwords and blocked attachments.

## Which forms are built as XFA PDF files?

XFA files are interactive forms, not statements. Bank statements are generated as ordinary PDFs, so you are unlikely to meet XFA there. You meet it in forms around banking: older loan or account applications, government and tax forms, insurance claims and internal company forms built in Adobe LiveCycle Designer.

Three signs that a file is XFA:

1. **The "please wait" page** appears in a browser, a phone viewer or a converter, but the form shows in Adobe Reader.
2. **The fields grow.** In Reader, a table gains rows as you type, or sections appear when you tick a box. That behaviour is typical of a dynamic XFA form.
3. **The document properties** in Acrobat or Reader name Adobe LiveCycle Designer, or a similar form designer, as the creating application.

## Static and dynamic XFA forms before conversion

XFA forms come in two kinds, and they convert differently. A static XFA form has a fixed layout and usually carries ordinary page content too, so many viewers and converters can read its printed text. A dynamic XFA form builds its pages only when opened in a reader that understands XFA, so other tools see just the placeholder.

If your file shows its labels and boxes in a browser but the typed answers are missing, it is likely static, and the values sit in the XML rather than on the page. If the browser shows only "please wait", it is dynamic. Either way, opening it in Adobe Reader and printing or exporting from there gets the data out. Forms can also hide content in layers that viewers switch on and off, which causes a different kind of surprise; [what happens to PDF layers in an Excel conversion](/blog/pdf-layers-to-excel) explains that one.

## Getting XFA form data into Excel another way

Get XFA data into Excel by letting a reader that understands XFA draw the form first. Then save what it drew as an ordinary PDF, or export the field values directly. Both routes give a file that converters and Excel can read.

1. **Download the file** and open it in Adobe Reader or Acrobat on a computer, not in a browser tab. A browser's built-in viewer will show the placeholder.
2. **Check that the fields show** with their values. Scroll to the end; a dynamic form may have more pages than you expect.
3. **Print to a new PDF.** Choose a PDF printer as the destination. The result holds ordinary pages with the form drawn on them, which a converter can read.
4. **Or export the form data.** Acrobat's form tools can export the filled values as a data file, often XML. Excel can open XML through its Get Data options, which gives one column per field.
5. **Check one record.** Compare a few values in the sheet with the form on screen.

Printing works best when you need the form as it looks. Export works best when you need the values in columns, especially across many copies of the same form. If the print driver saves pages as images, the converted workbook can carry large pictures; [shrinking a converted Excel file that is too large](/blog/converted-excel-file-too-large) shows how to trim it.

## When an XFA PDF is the wrong source for Excel

An XFA PDF is the wrong source when the data behind it already exists somewhere in a better form. Forms like these are usually filled in by one system and read by another. The person or office that sent the file can often export the same records as a spreadsheet or CSV in seconds.

Ask for another file when:

- you need data from dozens or hundreds of copies of the same form
- you do not have Adobe Reader or Acrobat on a computer and cannot install them
- the form is a template the sender filled from a database, which already holds every value in rows

Retyping a single short form may also beat any route here. For a two-field form, it takes less time than printing and converting.

FastBankConvert is built for bank statement PDFs, which are ordinary pages rather than XFA forms, and it is built to read them into rows of date, description, amount and balance. It is getting ready to open; [join through Get started](/get-started) to hear when you can try it.
